Alteño is the newest restaurant from James Beard award-winning chef Johnny Curiel. It has quickly risen to the top of the dining scene, taking over the old Kini's space at the Clayton Club in Cherry Creek.
A Tribute to Heritage
This restaurant pays homage to Johnny's father, the original Alteño. It features flavors that remind him of his Jaliscan highland roots. The space is packed night after night. I had to make reservations three months in advance!

The Space
The vibe of the restaurant is moody and romantic. The fire-based wood oven fills the air with fantastic aromas from the moment you walk in. The soft lighting creates a romantic atmosphere, while the well-decorated space invites you in like family.
For date night, we sat at a two-top by the kitchen. This spot offered a wonderful ambiance and showcased the nonstop energy of the restaurant. I have also enjoyed sitting at the bar during happy hour. The bar features a delightful menu, friendly staff, and a chance for a different experience. If you can't get a reservation, try your luck walking in early at the bar. It worked for me!
The Food
Alteño boasts a shareable menu primarily featuring small plates, with some larger entrees available.
Raw Bar Delights
Some of my favorite dishes came from the raw bar. The Ahi Tuna Aguachile and the Kanpachi Tostadas are incredibly fresh. They capture the flavor of the fish while adding great texture and complementary flavors.
The baked Hokkaido Scallop is presented almost like a play on baked clams, bursting with garlicky goodness. Additionally, the Jalapeño Pan de Elote with truffle butter feels legendary.
Vegetarian Options
The Camote Asada is an agave-roasted sweet potato served with fennel whipped crema. This dish does not feel like a typical vegetarian option. It was my wife's favorite dish. Curiel features this on all of his menus, and it was one of the best bites we had all night.
The Queso Fundido with wild mushrooms and pasilla salsa is a fantastic way to start the second course. Alongside it, my favorite was the Strip Steak Vampire taco. Braised and grilled to perfection, the steak taco captures the essence of Mexican cuisine. It features heirloom corn tortillas, charred onion, and lime.
Final Thoughts
I absolutely love this restaurant and cannot get enough. I've been fortunate to taste about half the menu, and I cannot wait to return for some larger mains later this year.
This restaurant is a vibrant, welcoming addition to Cherry Creek. Its moody lighting and buzzing energy create a perfect getaway for happy hour, a fun night out, or a romantic date with your significant other.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Alteño is not just a restaurant; it is an experience. From the ambiance to the food, everything is designed to make you feel at home while enjoying authentic flavors. Whether you're looking for a cozy date night or a lively happy hour, Alteño has something for everyone.
Make sure to visit this culinary gem in Cherry Creek for an unforgettable dining experience!
